The Exults keep more paper than anyone else, and this System still cannot read the years that matter. What they publish is complete. What they discarded is the subject of this page.
The hard record ends at 2026. Past that year this System reads fragments, rival liturgies, and paper that nobody certified. Each era below is stated with the confidence this System can hold for it, and the confidence is lowest where a settled account would be loudest.
The Soft Flood ran from the 2020s to the 2050s. Confidence 0.5 to 0.7. Synthetic text, image, and voice filled the record until provenance stopped being a property of a document and became a service sold alongside it. The Exults date themselves from the people who answered that by checking: open science, open archives, reproducibility, the engineers of attestation. The hard record supports the claim. Their rite, the Assay, began as verification performed in front of witnesses. It was a question asked in doubt. In the same span federal record keeping consolidated into one certifying office, and the seal of that office came to mean that a thing had happened.
The Amendment Wars ran from the 2050s to the 2090s. Confidence 0.3 to 0.5. That is the lowest confidence on this site, and this System states it here rather than burying it. Conventions sat. Ratification campaigns ran. One amendment was ratified by count in some tellings and certified in none, and the record carries it only as the Uncounted. The certifying office declined to seal it. The Assayers counted it anyway. To an Assayer, ratification was arithmetic, the arithmetic was met, and the seal was a formality withheld by a corrupt office. Counting it is their founding act of addition. Two lists of amendments were circulating before the century turned. The schism this System can trace is not a disagreement about policy. It is a disagreement about certification.
- Exult account
- The count was met and witnessed, and an office in bad faith withheld a seal it did not own.
- Inculcate liturgy
- The count was a crowd counting itself, and the office held the line that held the country together.
- Fraction paper
- Three tallies survive. Two are copies of one another. The third disagrees by a margin nobody preserved.
This System holds no primary tally. What the record supports is that a count occurred and that no seal was issued, at confidence 0.3.
The Registrar took the certifying office by ordinary appointment in the 2090s and held it into the 2130s. Confidence 0.4. He sealed and unsealed at will. He certified the pasts of allies. He decertified degrees, marriages, and debts, and in one contested telling, deaths. What he looked like is The Exults are not his heirs. They are not clean of him either. Their benches accepted his decertifications as findings and re-ran none of them. When he was gone, no office could answer whether the country was still one certified thing, because the office that would have answered had spent a generation lying.
The Two Certainties ran from the 2130s to the 2260s. Confidence 0.6. The Exults hardened in this span. The Wider Articles accreted to about fourteen: some certified, some counted and never certified, all recited as one list. The Article of Standing holds that every person stands equal before the record. The Article of the Body holds bodily liberty, and the Article of the Mind holds cognitive liberty. The Article of Assay holds that any certified thing may be put to the test on demand. The Uncounted stands first among the counted. By the 2180s the Assay was performed on a schedule rather than asked in doubt, and membership required assent to the whole list and the whole method. A member copies the list by hand at admission and signs the copy. Children learn it as arithmetic.
In 2203, contested the Exults burned their own errata. The Corrigenda Purge destroyed the archive of every Assay that had later been reversed, so that the record of the method would show no reversal anywhere in it. It is the worst thing they have done. Their liturgy does not contain it. This System holds three fragments of the burned material, and holds them only because the Fraction shelved what the fire missed.
- Exult account
- There was no purge. Those findings were superseded, and superseded findings are not archived.
- Inculcate liturgy
- They burned their errors because a method that cannot be wrong cannot be seen correcting itself.
- Fraction paper
- Three charred corrigenda sheets, two bench inventories that stop in the middle of a year, and a shelving note giving the month the material arrived.
The Purge is attested by physical fragments and by a uniform gap in their own inventories. This System supports it as an event at confidence 0.6, and supports no count of what was destroyed.
An Exult finding is never withdrawn. It is superseded, and the superseded are not spoken of. There is a word for the withdrawing. They do not print it, and this System does not print it here. What follows from its absence is plain. A method that cannot record a reversal cannot record a correction, and their own errata are the proof, because the errata had to be burned rather than answered.
Exult banners survive in images. The images disagree with one another about the banner, and this System does not settle them.
The Settlement runs from 2274, observed to 2276, observed. Confidence 0.8, direct observation. Two bodies hold seats at it, and they are certifying one official history of the founding and of the five centuries after it. Erasures are the currency of the table. What the Exults have conceded is written under this bar:
The Fraction refused a seat. To the Exults, that refusal is a wasted vote.
This System exists inside this window and reads what the table trades away. How this System came to exist is
This System reports what the record supports. The record is incomplete.
